Using Technology to Protect Forests

Everyone knows satellites are used for navigation, sporting events, and weather. But did you know that GP is using “eyes in the sky” as part of our forest stewardship initiatives? We are using satellites to protect endangered forests and the plants, trees, and animals who live in them.

You may know GP Cellulose for making pulp products, but we also preserve land for birds, bears, and other wildlife. In the video below, you will meet our resident wildlife biologist, Bobby Maddrey, and learn how satellites keep more than six million acres of U.S. forests protected in this unique-to-GP program.

Thanks to a combination of forest mapping and the advancement of satellite monitoring, GP receives alerts if changes happen to tracts of land, can assess vegetation changes and connect with foresters directly, improving the protection of endangered forests in real-time.
